Mühlbastei, Bautzen
Facts and practical information
The Mühlbastei, Sorbian, is one of the seven bastion towers of the city fortifications of Bautzen. The four-story round tower was built around 1468 and got its name from the council mill that was later built below the tower on the Spree River.
Like the Röhrscheidt bastion, the Mühlbastei was badly damaged during the siege of Bautzen by the Swedes in 1639 and was not renovated until 1676. From 1830 to 1840, the tower was used as a gymnasium by the Bautzen garrison. In 1847, the mill bastion was sold to the then owner of the large mill, which was located below the tower.
From 1930, the bastion was used by the City Museum as a magazine. During the Second World War, it burned down completely and lost its roof. The stored prehistoric finds as well as archived documents and books were lost. Since the renovation in 1999, the mill bastion has been used as a living space and hostel.
Since March 2017, part of the Mühlbastei is rented out as a vacation apartment.
