Berlin Victory Column, Berlin
Facts and practical information
The Berlin Victory Column is an iconic monument situated in the heart of Berlin, Germany, commemorating Prussian military triumphs in the 19th century. Standing majestically at 67 meters, this grand column was inaugurated in 1873 and has since been a testament to the prowess and unity of the German people.
Designed by Heinrich Strack, the Victory Column, known locally as Siegessäule, was originally located in front of the Reichstag building but was moved to its present location at the Großer Stern (Great Star) in the Tiergarten park by the Nazis in 1939 as part of their plans for the redevelopment of Berlin. The column is crowned with a gilded statue of Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, which Berliners have affectionately nicknamed "Goldelse" or "Golden Lizzy."
The Victory Column serves as a memorial to the Prussian victories in the Danish-Prussian War, the Austro-Prussian War, and the Franco-Prussian War. The column's base is adorned with four bronze reliefs that depict these military successes and the column itself is made up of a series of sandstone blocks, with a viewing platform just below the statue of Victoria.
Visitors are welcome to climb the 285 steps that wind up inside the column to a viewing platform, which offers panoramic views of the bustling city of Berlin. The platform is a popular spot for both tourists and locals alike, providing a unique perspective of the city's layout and its many historic landmarks.
The Victory Column is not just a historical monument but also a cultural symbol, having been featured in films and serving as a rallying point during political demonstrations and public events. It is a place where history, culture, and the spirit of Berlin converge, making it an essential stop for anyone visiting Germany's vibrant capital city.
