Kirche im Diakoniewerk, Halle
Facts and practical information
The Institutional Church of the Diakonie or Church in the Diakoniewerk was built in 1893 as part of the Deaconess Institution according to plans by Friedrich Fahro in Halle. Together with the Philippuskirche in Leipzig, the church is one of only two sacred buildings in central Germany based on the Wiesbaden program.
The Deaconess Institution, whose historical parts were built from 1867 onwards, was Halle's first modern large hospital and at the same time the central branch of the order in the province of Saxony. The church stands in the garden of the institution and is surrounded by diaconal buildings.
The church building is a small central building with a cruciform ground plan in neo-Gothic style. Three arms of the cross were created as conchs. The church has a crossing tower. The neo-Gothic interior is almost completely preserved. The southern cross arm was equipped with two-story galleries, the other three cross arms with simple galleries. The altar stands in front of the northern cross arm, behind it the pulpit. Thus the altar, as the center of the liturgical events, is surrounded on three sides by the pews of the church and thus also acquires central spatial significance. Fahro's spatial arrangement follows the Wiesbaden program for the design of Protestant preaching churches. The church is considered to be of special architectural significance, as it is one of the earliest examples of this type of room, which had a significant influence on church construction in the 19th and 20th centuries.
In addition to a ground-level entrance from the park side, a special feature is a second entrance via a bridge-like entrance on the upper floor, which allows direct access from the hospital corridors.
