Elisa Fountain, Aachen
Facts and practical information
The Elisenbrunnen in Aachen is a neoclassical building designed by architects Johann Peter Cremer and Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It was built by Andreas Hansen, a private builder from Aachen. The building was named after the Prussian Crown Princess Elisabeth Ludovika of Bavaria, the daughter of the Bavarian King Maximilian I. Wife of the later Prussian King Frederick William IV. Her bust was made of Carrara marble by Christian Friedrich Tieck in 1828 and placed in the rotunda in 1832.
Today, the Elisenbrunnen consists of an open lobby with a Doric columned porch and a pavilion on the left and right with several rooms. The warm water of the Kaiserquelle flows from two drinking fountains and is led to the fountain via a pipe from the Büchel. The water is highly sulfurous, so that a characteristic smell of rotten eggs always emanates from the Elisenbrunnen.
