Halde Hoheward, Herten
Facts and practical information
The Hoheward slagheap is a tailings pile in the Ruhr area. It was formed from fills from the Recklinghausen II colliery, the Ewald colliery and the General Blumenthal/Haard colliery. Situated between the cities of Herten and Recklinghausen, but mostly in the Hertener Mark, it forms the largest tailings pile landscape of the Ruhr area together with the Hoppenbruch tailings pile as well as the vast Emscherbruch central landfill in the neighboring Resser Mark to the west. The highest point of the slag heap is reached at a height of 152.5 m above sea level. The Hoheward and Hoppenbruch waste rock piles are part of the Route of Industrial Culture and the Hoheward Landscape Park. The owner of both slagheaps is the Ruhr Regional Association, which took over the areas from Deutsche Steinkohle AG. As project sponsor, it is responsible for the development of the Hoheward slag heap. In good visibility, the Rhine Tower in Düsseldorf, about 50 km away, can be seen.
