Neuer Brunnen, Mainz
Facts and practical information
The New Fountain in the Bleichenviertel district of Mainz is a late Baroque building. It was built in the period from 1724 to 1726 by Johannes Weydt. The most striking feature of the fountain is the obelisk in the center, which is about 12 meters high and covered with bas-reliefs on various themes. At its base are a total of four sculptures, each representing two river gods and two lions. The oval basin and the obelisk are made of red sandstone.
The river gods were created by Franz Matthias Hiernle in 1726, but they were exchanged for copies in 1877; the originals have since been on display in the Landesmuseum Mainz. The sphinx-like lions from Savonnières, which replaced formerly existing nymphs from 1828, were created by Joseph Scholl.
The last renovation works on the fountain were finished in autumn 2002.
The fountain is located on the Neubrunnenplatz, named after it, on the Große Bleiche.
