Tassilolinde, Wessobrunn
Facts and practical information
The Tassilolinde is a winter lime tree near the monastery wall in Wessobrunn, Upper Bavaria. It was named after the Bavarian Duke Tassilo III, who, according to a modern embellishment of the legend of the founding of the monastery, had the dream under the lime tree that made him found the monastery of Wessobrunn. The lime tree is 25 meters high and its crown has a diameter of 27 meters. The trunk of the tree has a circumference of about 14 meters, which is the third largest circumference of a linden tree in Bavaria, after the Wolframslinde with 16 meters and the Kasberger Linde with 15.8 meters. The exact age of the tree is not known, but like most very old and very thick trees, it is considered to be "thousand years old". However, even the oldest winter lime trees are unlikely to reach this age.
