"Römerturm", Wessobrunn
Facts and practical information
The bell tower of the former monastery in Wessobrunn, a community in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau, was built in the mid-13th century. The bell tower at Klosterhof 8 is a protected architectural monument.
The massive tower made of tuff ashlars also served as a defense tower and place of retreat in case of danger. It was originally accessible only by a ladder. The first floor served at times as a prison.
In the course of secularization, the monastery was abolished in 1803. From 1810 the monastery church was demolished due to dilapidation. Only the tower was preserved, as the parish church of St. John Baptist standing next to it had no bells.
