Burghof Rethem
Facts and practical information
Rethem Castle is a 13th-century lowland castle in Rethem in Lower Saxony, located directly on the Aller River. The bastion-like water castle, built about the 16th century, had an important position for the dukes of Brunswick-Lüneburg. It was located on the state border and at a crossing point of the Aller River, which was important for the Lüneburg salt trade. After destruction during the war, fires and overbuilding, only a few remains of the castle walls were left in the 20th century. After archaeological explorations in 2000 and 2001, the castle foundations have been covered over since 2004 by the new building of the Burghof Rethem, which presents itself as a cultural event center with historical building fabric.
