In the Middle Ages, the castle was one of the most important fortifications on the lower Saar River and served to control the river as a traffic artery. With a length of almost 900 meters, the predecessor complex "Alt-Montclair", which was slopped in 1351, was one of the largest castles of the High Middle Ages in Germany.
