Turm Jerusalem, Trier

Facts and practical information
Jerusalem Tower is a fortified residential tower in the city of Trier at the Domfreihof. It is the oldest building of the medieval group of buildings "Palais Walderdorff" built in the 11th century.
Originally, the tower had six floors. Of these, the base floor, which is now heaped up, and the three lower floors still existed. In the 19th century, the two upper floors were removed. In Trier, there were probably seven or eight such fortified residential towers, of which only the Dreikönigenhaus, the Frankenturm and the Konviktsturm have survived in addition to the Jerusalem Tower.
The tower probably dates to the 11th century. According to the Gesta Treverorum, it was already destroyed in 1147 and was repaired within six weeks on the occasion of the visit of Pope Eugene III.
The tower had double arcade windows and in the first floor, which is buried today, slit windows were found during the restoration in 1999. The present windows were broken into the east wall in the 18th century. A stone spiral staircase rising in the wall and the original high entrance on the third floor were also discovered.
Today, the upper floor of the tower is used as the wedding hall of the registry office.
