Florapark, Magdeburg
Facts and practical information
Flora-Park Garten is a public park in the city of Magdeburg. Until 2004, the park was called Bördegarten.
The park is located in the northwestern part of the city in the Neustädter Feld district and is 42 hectares in size.
The park was created between 1989 and 1994, which makes it one of the youngest parks in the city. The park is divided by the wooden path into an eastern and a western part. The wooden path itself is lined on both sides by a double row of ornamental cherries, which are particularly striking during the blossoming in spring.
In the western part there are pond, rose, perennial and cottage gardens, as well as a small pond. The eastern part of the park is overlooked by a hill and has a large children's playground.
Until 2004, the park bore the name Bördegarten, in reference to the Magdeburg Börde. At the request of the operator of the neighboring Florapark shopping center, the city council then renamed the park "Flora-Park Garten." The park and shopping center are now called similarly.
The decision of the city council was controversial with regard to the "renaming by order". In particular, the council factions Bündnis 90/Die Grünen and future! - die jugendpartei had spoken out against the renaming.
The name Flora Park of the shopping center is based on the nursery originally located in the area of the shopping center.
