Facts and practical information

The Osterwald smelter adit in Osterwald was a mine in the eastern Osterwald coalfield that was excavated in 1842. As early as 1585, coal was mined at the Osterwald mountain range by order of Duke Julius of Brunswick. The mine was operated intermittently until 1953. Today, the mine is used as a visitor mine and is a protected cultural monument.
