Oberes Schloss, Immendingen
Facts and practical information
The Upper Castle is both a landmark of the municipality of Immendingen and its town hall. The oldest part of the castle is dated to the 12th century.
For the years 1409 and 1466, the castle is attested as the property of the Lords of Almenshofen, in whose possession it remained until 1531. After the House of Fürstenberg acquired the Upper Castle from the von Reischach family in 1807, they set up the first machine factory in Baden there in 1835, whose large water wheel was powered by water from the Weisenbach. The production program included the construction of wheels, sawmills and grinding mills. In 1889, production was moved to the Lower Castle. In the 1930s, the municipality of Immendingen acquired the castle, which was used for residential purposes, including refugees, until 1961. The town had the castle thoroughly renovated and converted into the town hall between 1961 and 1963.
The castle is approximately square with side lengths of 33 and 27 meters, respectively, and has a round tower at each corner except for the northeast corner. In the center of the complex there is an inner courtyard. Originally, it was probably a moated castle, the moats of which are now buried.
Every two years on the first weekend in September, the Immendingen Castle Festival is celebrated by the municipality of Immendingen and the local associations around the Upper Castle and in the adjacent streets.
