Deichmühle Haseldorf
Facts and practical information
The dike mill in Haseldorf was a windmill built around 1540 in the municipality of Haseldorf and a historical landmark of the village. It was located between the old dike and the street Deichreihe. In 2019, the building was completely demolished. In the village there was also a field mill on Neuer Weg, which also no longer exists today.
According to the village chronicle, the original dike mill burned down on Good Friday 1846 after being struck by lightning. It was rebuilt as an octagonal building.
Around 1870, a steam mill with a high chimney was built next to the windmill. Its steam engine was replaced by an electric motor in 1929. The buildings are largely preserved and in operation. The mill business was run by the Schuldt family, who also owned the mill stump. The owners' grandparents leased the dike mill and field mill from Prince Schoenaich-Carolath-Schilden of the Haseldorf Castle estate in 1909.
After the Second World War, the mill stump was converted into housing. The windmills of the old mill were dismantled in 1942. In 1952, a stage designer from the Hamburg Schauspielhaus purchased the mill from the estate management. In 1961 the building was sold to the family of the present owner.
After water damage, a stone wall was built around the walls of the mill to reinforce the wooden beams. This wall was considered by the monument protection authority to be an encroachment on the historical fabric of the building and the building was refused monument protection. Another reason given was the absence of the windmill wings.
At the beginning of 2019, an acute danger of collapse was determined during the assessment by experts. On this basis and against the will of the owner, the district of Pinneberg ordered the demolition of the building. Demolition work began on March 13, 2019.
