Ellerburger Mühle
Facts and practical information
The Westphalian Mill Route is a designation for a tourism concept in the Minden-Lübbecke district that links 43 restored mills to form an experiential route. Only at two points does the circuit leave the district territory for a few kilometers: between Heimsen and Großenheerse, it runs for a stretch through the district of Nienburg near the Lower Saxony Mill Road; between Oberbauerschaft and Holzhausen, the route runs through the district of Herford.
Many of the mills associated in the Westphalian Mill Road are operational and can be visited on opening days. On almost every weekend and public holiday between March and October, at least one of the mills that has its grinding and baking day on that date is open. Almost all of the mills conduct simultaneous guided tours and a tourist program on Whit Monday and the fourth Sunday in August. Almost all of the Milling and Baking Days scheduled for 2020 and 2021 were cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The mills are looked after by local mill associations under the leadership of the Mühlenbauhof Petershagen. The Mühlenkreis also houses the office of the German Society for Mill Research and Preservation in the Mühlenbauhof.
The DGM is the only German founding member of the Via Molina. In 2018, mill organizations from the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark joined forces with the aim of having the Via Molina certified as a Council of Europe Cultural Trail. Through this cultural trail, mills throughout Germany as well as in other European countries will be connected in the medium to long term. The Westphalian Mill Road has already been linked to the Lower Saxony Mill Road for years by connecting three mills in the district of Nienburg via a secondary route.
