Marowski-Haus, Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve
Facts and practical information
The so-called Marowski House is the oldest house of Oderberg in Brandenburg and is on the list of monuments of Brandenburg. It was rebuilt after the devastating town fires of 1670 and 1672 by the watermiller Christian Otte in 1680. It is the oldest known "small-town craftsman's house in the town of Oderberg and also the oldest town house in the Barnim and Märkisch Oderland districts." On the west gable, in the former door beam or lintel transom, the inscription is carved: "M - CHRISTIAN OTTE, ANNO 1680, DEN 11. MAI". Otte operated the water mill in Berliner Straße until 1695. In 1733, the master potter Christoph Warband acquired the house and set up a pottery. The pottery was continued by Johann Warband from 1764.
The picturesque half-timbered house is located in the so-called painter's corner in the old Oberkietz and was a popular motif for picturesque genre scenes in earlier centuries. Some pictures still exist in the Oderberg local museum. The two-story, cross-partitioned half-timbered house was partly built with older beams, which obviously came from previous buildings. Centrally located is the large open and on the first floor massive black kitchen with a tapped half-timbered chimney. It has attached half-timbered walls on the upper floor and a conical smoke stack in the roof area.
Despite some alterations in the past centuries, a large part of the original substance has been preserved, as well as building details such as doors, windows and stoves from different periods. Of particular interest is the truss of the rafter roof with the only rarely documented longitudinal bracing of the Marches. Originally thatched with reed, the roof of the house had to be re-roofed with roof tiles in the form of plain tiles in the 18th century due to the danger of fire in the city. The roof was reconstructed as a plain tile roofing with wooden spiles during the renovation in the mid-1990s. In 2015, the roof was re-roofed using the old beaver tails in double coverage.
