Facts and practical information

The former Roman Limes fort of Kapersburg in the Taunus region is one of the best preserved Roman military sites of the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes. It housed the Numerus Nidensium, an auxiliary force long erroneously believed to have been recruited from residents of the nearby Vicus Nida. Marcus Reuter, however, already pointed out at the turn of the millennium that this could not have been the case for epigraphic reasons as well as on the basis of Roman recruitment practice. The construction history of the fort shows several construction and rebuilding phases since the end of the 1st century, as well as traces of a fort vicus. The fort was probably cleared without a fight shortly after the middle of the 3rd century as part of the fall of the limes.
