Museum für konkrete Kunst, Ingolstadt
Facts and practical information
The Museum für Konkrete Kunst in Ingolstadt presents the diversity of Concrete Art since its beginnings in its permanent collection and in temporary exhibitions on an exhibition area of around 800 m². In addition, it is dedicated to selected aspects of design, which in many cases was closely associated with Concrete Art in the 20th century.
The foundation of the collection was formed by the purchase of the private art collection of Eugen Gomringer, who is one of the central representatives of so-called concrete poetry. The purchase could be realized through the generous support of industry and trade as well as numerous donations from the citizens of Ingolstadt. On June 26, 1992, the Museum of Concrete Art was opened in its current rooms in a former barracks building from the 18th century. Founding director and long-time director of the museum was Peter Volkwein. The architectural design by the Munich architects Claus and Forster was awarded the BDA Prize of Bavaria in 1993.
In order to provide an appropriate setting for the museum's constantly growing collection and diverse activities, a new building is currently being constructed on the former foundry site in Ingolstadt. The client is the Viennese office Querkraft. The foundation stone was laid on June 7, 2016, and the opening is planned for 2022. The historic foundry hall will be preserved and used in the future as the reception area and ticket office of the Museum of Concrete Art and Design, as it will be called after completion. It will also house a spacious restaurant, a bar with lounge, and the large North Hall, an elongated, light-flooded space with free exhibitions. The actual museum is being built in the basement. It will accommodate the constantly expanding design collection.
The director of the museum was Simone Schimpf. On July 1, 2021, she took over as director of the Neues Museum Nürnberg. The new director of the museum is Theres Rohde. Rohde had already been deputy director of the museum since 2016.
