Alte Hofhaltung, Bamberg
Facts and practical information
The Alte Hofhaltung is a historic complex of buildings in Bamberg. It consists of former residential and commercial buildings of the episcopal court, which were built from the 15th century on the site of the palace of Emperor Henry II.
In former times, a Babenberg fort, the Castrum Babenberg, stood here on Bamberg Cathedral Hill. In 1003, it became the palace of the Duke of Bavaria and later Roman-German Emperor Henry II. After the foundation of the Bamberg diocese, it became the residence of the Bamberg bishops in 1007. After the buildings on the Domberg had been completed, the Alte Hofhaltung, which still contains remains of the 11th century palace and chapel in its core, stood between the cathedral to the south and the Neue Residenz to the north. After the prince-bishop moved to a new palace, the buildings were used as a chancellery, library and council chamber. Today, the city's Historical Museum is housed there, and the Henneberg wing is home to the Cathedral Building Lodge. In the summer, the Calderon Festival is held in the courtyard.
