August-Gottschalk-Haus, Esens
Facts and practical information
The August-Gottschalk-Haus is a museum and memorial to the recent history of East Frisian Jews in Esens. It is housed in the former schoolhouse of the local Jewish community, right next to the remains of the synagogue destroyed by Esens SA men on the night of the pogrom on November 10, 1938.
The memorial is named after the last religious official and teacher of the Jewish community in Esens, August Gottschalk, who was instrumental in the planning and construction of the building in 1899 and lived here until his death.
A special feature in the northwestern German region as far as the Netherlands is the ritual bath rediscovered during renovation work. The museum is run by the association Ökumenischer Arbeitskreis Juden und Christen in Esens.
