Platz der Republik, Wuppertal
Facts and practical information
Platz der Republik is an inner-city square in the Ostersbaum residential district of Wuppertal.
Situated on the Engelnberg hill, the 13,200 m² square was leveled in 1825/26 and used as a parade ground for the Landwehr. On the square or in its immediate vicinity is said to have been an old rampart castle, the Engelnberg Castle, whose existence, however, is not certain. The square, still described as a "desolate place" in 1856, was used not only for military purposes but also as an Elberfeld fairground for public and Easter festivals. Towards the end of the 19th century, the city of Elberfeld grew up to the heights of the Engelnberg and the square became the center of a densely populated residential area.
In 1899 the square was expanded and August von der Heydt donated the Fountain of Justice in the center of the square in 1910 on the occasion of a tercentenary celebration of Elberfeld. The square received its name Platz der Republik at the time of the Weimar Republic.
During the Nazi period, the square again served as a drill ground. In addition, a high bunker was built to the north of the square to protect the population from bombing raids and served as an emergency shelter after World War II until 1957. This bunker, which was briefly known regionally as the Jazz Cellar, was characteristic of the cityscape. Demolition of the bunker began on February 9, 2009, and the square was redesigned at a cost of 1.6 million euros. In addition, the statue on the Fountain of Justice was restored by private donors.
To the west of the square, separated by a road, is the Freikirchliche Friedhof Wuppertal with chapel.
