Rheintor, Linz am Rhein
Facts and practical information
The Rhine Gate is a city gate tower of the city fortifications of Linz on the Rhine, located on the banks of the Rhine.
In the 15th or 16th century, the westernmost of Linz's city gates, made of basalt and slate quarry stone, was rebuilt as a successor to the gate originally built with the rest of the city fortifications between 1320 and 1329. Later it was rebuilt several times.
In contrast to the rest of the city fortifications, most of which were demolished in 1861, the gate located at Burgplatz 1 is still preserved. It is listed as a cultural monument.
