Fossilien- und Heimatmuseum Messel, Messel
Facts and practical information
The Fossil and Local History Museum Messel was founded by the Museumsverein Messel e.V. in the old town hall, Langgasse 2, and is maintained by it with the support of the municipality of Messel. The idea was born during the time of the struggle for the preservation of the Messel pit, which was to be used as a landfill.
The museum shows both the local history and economic development of the local industry, as well as a large exhibition on the geological history of the Middle Eocene with original finds from the Messel Pit. The museum is characterized by a modern and visitor-friendly design, which also meets scientific requirements. Exemplary, for example, are the reconstructions of the subtropical habitat offered to visitors, which are not only suitable for children.
In 2006, the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments honored the Museum Association for exemplary volunteer work in the preservation of historical monuments.
