Wehranlage Meesenburg, Lübbecke
Facts and practical information
Today, Meesenburg is the remains of a hilltop castle on the 225.8-meter-high Meesenkopf south of the town of Lübbecke in the district of Minden-Lübbecke in North Rhine-Westphalia.
The castle was probably built by Count Otto I of Tecklenburg. This Tecklenburg castle was then conquered and destroyed by the Minden bishop Konrad I von Rüdenberg in a joint military action with the Osnabrück bishopric. Allegedly, the fortification on the Meesenkopf was subsequently demolished at the instigation of Minden Bishop Konrad around 1216. The stones were used for the construction of the church of St. Andrew in Lübbecke, according to the more recent bishop's chronicle. Today, only the rampart and the moat can be recognized from the castle.
