Am Keilstein, Regensburg
Facts and practical information
Am Keilstein is a nature reserve of about 46 hectares belonging to the city of Regensburg in the east of Regensburg, Bavaria. The protected area includes the southern slopes of the Keilstein facing the Danube and is a retreat for particularly heat- and drought-loving animal and plant species. Thus, there are also plant species that have migrated from the steppe regions of Eastern Europe via the Danube valley. The protected area is bordered to the north by the nature reserve Südöstliche Juraausläufer bei Regensburg, and to the west by the Keilberg limestone quarry, whose outer boundaries have been defined since 1998. To the east of the area lies the Tegernheim Gorge geological fault line, which here demarcates the Franconian Jurassic from the crystalline basement of the Bavarian Forest.
The large rock is designated as geotope 362R002 by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment. See also the list of geotopes in Regensburg. The nature reserve is part of the fauna-flora habitat area Trockenhänge bei Regensburg.
