Die Münze, Karlsruhe

Facts and practical information
The State Mint of Baden-Württemberg Karlsruhe location is the smallest mint in Germany, located in downtown Karlsruhe. As was customary in the past, the residence of a prince always included a mint. This found its place in 1732 in an outbuilding of the palace. Only two years after the founding of the mint, it was moved to the protective walls of Durlach. Through a clever policy of alliances and marriages, Baden gained a great deal of influence and became a grand duchy. As a result of these events, it was decided to build a new mint as early as 1816.
The building was based on plans by the military architect Friedrich Arnold from 1816, which were taken up by the well-known Karlsruhe architect Friedrich Weinbrenner and completed after his death on February 9, 1827 by his student Friedrich Theodor Fischer. The first coin of ten Rhenish florins was minted in the spring of 1827 at the mint, which still produces between 210 and 250 million coins a year.
In 1998, the state mints in Karlsruhe and Stuttgart merged to form the State Mint of Baden-Württemberg.
The mint mark of the Karlsruhe mint has been "G" since 1872.
In 2021, around 200 million coins worth 40 million euros were minted in Karlsruhe.
