Saturn, Tatra National Park
Facts and practical information
Saturn is a crag in the Kościeliska Valley in the West Tatra Mountains. It is located in the northwestern ridge of Upłazkowa Turnia, which separates Pisaniarski Żleb from Wąwozu Kraków. On the south-eastern side of Saturn is the Saddle behind Saturn. The north-western slopes of Saturn fall to the main stream of the Koscieliska Valley.
The name of the crag comes from the fact that in the past small quantities of lead ore were mined under Saturn, above the Written Glade, and astrologers associated this ore with the planet Saturn. The Saturn and Ratusz turbines are perfectly visible from the Scribbling Glade. They are situated about 400 m to the east from the road running along the bottom of the valley. Their limestone cliffs are white above the forest.
Saturn is made of carbonate rocks. It is inaccessible for tourists, there are no marked hiking trails leading to it. However, it is sometimes visited by mountaineers. From the Pass behind Saturn it is possible to climb it without any problems. However, to the south, to the Saturn Valley and to the west it falls down with steep walls. On the western walls of Saturn there is the westernmost in the Tatra Mountains limestone stand. The walls and rocks of Saturn in general are the habitat of a rich flora of limestone plants, among which there are many rare species, some of which occur only in the Tatras.
There are several caves in the slopes of Saturn, including Yellow Shelter, Two-Hole Rift, and Yellow Hole.
There is a climbing route leading from the switchback behind the Town Hall to the top of Saturn. First ascent: Jacek Bilski and Wladyslaw Cywinski on June 24, 1994.
