Christ Church, Düren
Facts and practical information
The Christuskirche is a Protestant church in Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and is a listed building.
It was rebuilt after the Second World War on the site where the Church of the Resurrection, destroyed in the air raid of November 16, 1944, had previously stood, namely in Schenkelstraße
On the basis of an architectural competition announced on January 30, 1952, the authors of the winning design, Helmut Hentrich and Hubert Petschnigg in Düsseldorf, were commissioned with its execution. The church interior was built in a clear, blunt cross shape. The communion table was placed in the crossing point and thus in the center of the congregation. The floor was lowered in steps towards the center. The four bells were cast by the Rincker bell and art foundry in Sinn, which had also produced the bells of the previous church. The new bells are set to the notes d', f', g' and b'.
The foundation stone was laid on April 26, 1953, and it was consecrated just under a year later, on April 4, 1954. At that time, it had the highest freestanding church tower in Germany.
The Christuskirche is entered in the list of monuments of the city of Düren under No. 1/111.
