Molenturm, Bremen
Facts and practical information
The pier light Überseehafen Süd is a small lighthouse in the port area of the city of Bremen. It stands on the final pier of the Überseestadt at the turning basin of the exit of the timber and factory port, the grain port and the crane port. Originally, it served together with the beacon on Shipyard Island to light the entrance to the Überseehafen. However, it lost this function after the port was filled in in the 1990s.
Architecturally, the "Mouse Tower" is a round tower twelve meters high with two galleries, a bay window, a green-painted lantern house and a copper roof. Built in 1906 of uniformly hewn gray-brown porta sandstone ashlars, the tower is still in use today and carries a green light over nine nautical miles. In 2007, clearing of the access path was done along with clear cutting, making the path more walkable.
In 2019, access via the pier was paved as part of the development of the "Waller Sand" park area on the edge of Überseestadt. Since then, the tower has been a popular destination for pedestrians and cyclists.
In 2000, the pier house was listed as an individual monument with the pier section as an ensemble.
