Zweigstelle Jüdisches Kulturmuseum, Augsburg
Facts and practical information
The Jewish Museum Augsburg-Swabia was established in 1985 under the name "Jewish Cultural Museum Augsburg-Swabia" in the west wing of the Augsburg Synagogue, which was built between 1914 and 1917 in Halderstraße. After being misused during the Nazi era, the building was renovated between 1972 and 1985. In 1985, the museum was the first independent Jewish museum in the Federal Republic of Germany.
The Jewish Museum Augsburg Swabia sees itself as a historical museum that draws on Jewish history in Bavarian Swabia to make references to current social issues. It is a place where aspects of migration, integration, homeland and culture are discussed from the perspective of a minority and where it is shown that diversity is neither a threat nor an enrichment, but normality.
The museum maintains two locations. The Innenstadt location houses the permanent exhibition, which includes a visit to the Augsburg Synagogue, inaugurated in 1917 and used by the Jewish Community of Swabia-Augsburg. The Former Kriegshaber Synagogue site opened in 2014 and is located in the oldest surviving synagogue in Bavarian Swabia.
On a supra-regional level, the museum cooperates in the "Network of Historic Synagogue Sites in Bavarian Swabia".
Since November 2018, the museum has been called the Jewish Museum Augsburg Swabia. Barbara Staudinger is the director of the museum. From May 2022, Carmen Reichert will be her successor.
