Rheinpark, Düsseldorf
Facts and practical information
Rheinpark Golzheim is a park in Düsseldorf, designed in 1906 as Kaiser-Wilhelm-Park by Walter von Engelhardt and further developed in the 1920s according to the principles of the Volkspark.
The park stretches from the Pempelfort district far into the Golzheim district for about 2.5 kilometers along the right bank of the Rhine. Its current design is closely linked to the concept of the GeSoLei urban planning and health exhibition held in 1926. It is characterized by spacious lawns, by a promenade along an artfully designed bank protection wall made of natural stone, and by a large contiguous stand of trees along Cecilienallee. The promenade offers one of the best views of the Düsseldorf skyline, the Rhine and Rhine shipping. The lawns cover about 24 hectares and serve as sunbathing, picnic and barbecue areas on warm days. Walkers, dog owners, cyclists, joggers and ballplayers from all over the world, on the other hand, can also be found in wind and weather. Dog runs and partly also children's play areas are specially fenced off.
Since 2001, the entire complex has been listed as a historical monument. On the evening of June 9, 2014, about 60 percent of the park's trees were destroyed by a thunderstorm with hurricane-force winds triggered by low pressure system Ela.
