The deserters' monument in Bernau near Berlin is a bronze relief by the sculptor Friedrich Schötschel from Biesenthal. It was installed on May 15, 1998, the "Day of Conscientious Objectors", at the northern passage of the historic city wall of the village.
The relief shows a deserter bound by hands and feet during his execution. He is blindfolded. Next to him there are numerous bullet holes in the wall. The relief is complemented by the inscription "Because he did not want to kill".
At the foot of the relief a metal plate commemorates all deserters and conscientious objectors. On it is to be read: Within sight of the deserters' monument are two other monuments; on the one hand, the war memorial commemorating several war conflicts of the 19th century, and on the other hand, the obelisk of the Cemetery of Honor for Fallen of the Red Army.
