Kröpeliner Tor, Rostock
Facts and practical information
As the westernmost of the four large gates of the Rostock city fortifications, the Kröpelin Gate was built in the Gothic style around 1270. Even then it was very large with its two stories and remained one of the most massive of the city gates, which at times numbered up to 22. Whether it was named after the small town of Kröpelin, in whose direction it leads, or after a patrician family of the same name, is still disputed today. It represents the western end of Kröpelin Street.
