Church of St. Nicholas, Siegen
Facts and practical information
Nikolaikirche is a church building in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Siegen, whose history dates back to the 13th century. The church stands on the Siegberg, the settlement core of the medieval old town. It gets its architectural peculiarity from its hexagonal ground plan; the nave is the only European hall hexagon north of the Alps. The steeple of the Nikolaikirche bears the crown, the symbol of the city of Siegen, a forged and gilded crown with a diameter of over two meters from the 17th century. As the tallest building on the Siegberg, the church tower, 53 meters high and painted in a striking red and white, dominates the silhouette of the city. The church gained international fame through its church treasure with a silver baptismal bowl from the 16th century. Since the Reformation, the Nikolaikirche has been a Protestant house of worship, and since 1580 it has been Siegen's Protestant Reformed parish church. Below the church are the Siegen Town Hall and the market square.
