Haus Ruhrnatur, Mülheim
Facts and practical information
Haus Ruhrnatur in Mülheim an der Ruhr was established in 1992 by Rheinisch-Westfälische Wasserwerksgesellschaft, which currently belongs to the E.ON Group. Similar to the Aquarius Water Museum of the same owner, it is dedicated to the theme of "water".
The Ruhr ecosystem is shown using fish from the Ruhr, small animals under the microscope, sounds and smells. Since 2010, the exhibition has been expanded to include the topics of climate and regenerative energies. Visitors can experiment with wind turbines, water turbines and solar collectors and find out what they can learn from nature when dealing with energy. Excursions for families, school classes and professional visitors are offered. There are a total of 32 exhibition units in the building, the largest of which is the Ruhr Aquarium.
The private museum building that houses Haus Ruhrnatur was built in 1926 as a student boathouse according to plans by architects Helbing and Voigt. The same sandstone was used for the façade as for the Kahlenberg hydroelectric power plant, which is also located on the lock island of the Ruhr. It has been a listed building since January 17, 1990 and - like the vacant neighboring private water station and the hydroelectric power plant belonging to the E.ON Group - is part of the Route of Industrial Heritage.
