Langenbergpark, Bocholt
Facts and practical information
Langenbergpark is a municipal park in Bocholt in the western Münsterland region.
The park is located north of the city ring road on Adenauerallee opposite St.-Georg-Gymnasium and on Stenerner Weg opposite Weiterbildungskolleg Westmünsterland. It covers an area of approximately 2 hectares. Part of the area of the later Langenbergpark was ceded by the government of the Principality of Salm to the city and the Bauerschaften of the parish of Bocholt as a cemetery in return for a levy of eight talers. The area served as a cemetery for about a hundred years from January 1, 1807. During this time the cemetery was extended twice until a new municipal cemetery was opened on Blücherstraße in 1908. A small burial ground with memorial stones is preserved in the northeast corner. On the southern edge there is a playground and in the middle of the park there is the so-called Meckermann, a stone sculpture with an inscription. The park is known for its old tree population, besides large copper beeches exotic trees grow here, which a tree nature trail leads past.
The old cemetery was given the name Langenbergpark after its redesign in 1937. It is named after the city's benefactor, Regierungsrat Dr. Aloys Franz Bernhard van Langenberg. After the end of the Second World War, the park was called "Soviet Paradise" by the people of Bocholt, because the liberated Soviet prisoners preferred to stay there in the summer of 1945.
