Castle, Donzdorf
Facts and practical information
Donzdorf Castle in the middle of the town of Donzdorf in the Göppingen district of Baden-Württemberg was built in 1568 by order of Hans von Rechberg zu Hohenrechberg zu Illeraichen-Scharfenberg. The three-story Renaissance building with four octagonal towers was rebuilt several times over the centuries.
From 1764 to 1765, the palace garden was created to the south of the palace as a Baroque garden complex. At the beginning of the 19th century, this was transformed into its present form as an English landscape garden. In the park, which is surrounded by a wall, there is a sundial in front of the castle pond.
In 1987, Count von Rechberg and Rothenlöwen sold the castle to the town of Donzdorf. The castle garden has been open to the public since 1992. Since May 1995, the castle has functioned as the administrative center of the town of Donzdorf. On the first floor is the castle restaurant, designed by an architect from Venice in the Venetian style, with a historic vaulted hall.
