Haus Bodelschwingh, Dortmund
Facts and practical information
Haus Bodelschwingh is a moated castle in the Bodelschwingh district of Dortmund, which is part of the Mengede borough. It is one of 18 noble residences in Dortmund and is considered the largest and most representative complex in the city area.
The present castle was the ancestral seat of the von Bodelschwingh family and developed from a simple two-room house of the late Middle Ages, which was extended in the 16th/17th century in the Renaissance style. By marriage of the heiress daughter it came at the end of the 19th century to the family zu Innhausen und Knyphausen, whose property the castle still is today.
The complex is registered as a monument in the list of monuments of the city of Dortmund. The associated castle park in the style of a landscape garden has also been listed since 1983. Today, the manor house serves as the residence of the zu Innhausen and Knyphausen family, while the buildings in the outer castle are rented out for residential and business purposes. It is therefore not normally possible to visit the site, which is only open to interested visitors on the annual Open Monument Day.
