Couvenwandbrunnen, Aachen
Facts and practical information
The Couvenwand Fountain is located in the Aachen district of Burtscheid, North Rhine-Westphalia at Abteiplatz.
The wall fountain was designed by Jakob Couven, a Baroque master builder from Aachen, as part of a later extension of the Wespienhaus courtyard, and not by his father Johann Joseph Couven in 1737 as originally assumed. It says: "Jakob Couven was commissioned at an unknown date to install a fountain on the courtyard façade of the factory wings, which was installed behind the church of St. John in Burtscheid after the war. Here a plaque incorrectly identifies it as the work of Couven the Elder."
At the beginning of the 20th century, due to financial problems of the owner, the Wespienhaus was sold and the interior was auctioned off, whereby the fountain could be saved for the city. On the occasion of the establishment of the first Couven Museum Aachen in the Fey House on Seilgraben, the fountain was relocated to the courtyard of this house in 1928. After Haus Fey was almost completely destroyed by the bombing of July 14, 1943, the fountain was again rescued and put into temporary storage. Finally, in 1993, it was placed in its current location below the church of St. John at Abteiplatz in Burtscheid.
