Schloss Varlar
Facts and practical information
Varlar Abbey, often referred to as a monastery, was a Premonstratensian monastery founded by the Counts of Cappenberg in the Münsterland region. The monastery, which was converted into Varlar Castle, stands in the Bauerschaft Varlar in the Rosendahl district of Osterwick. The community there existed from about 1123/24 until secularization in 1803, after which the monastery passed into the possession of the Wild and Rhine Counts of Salm, who took over much of the extensive ecclesiastical property and also became sovereigns for a short time.
