Museum Römervilla
Facts and practical information
The Roman villa of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler on the Silberberg is an archaeological site documenting centuries of changing use from the mid-first century AD to the early Middle Ages. The excavated site is located on the outskirts of the Rhineland-Palatinate town of Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler in the district of Ahrweiler.
Initially laid out as a Roman estate, enlarged and rebuilt several times, the site was cleared according to plan around 259/60 AD. In late antiquity, the main building was converted into a hostel, which was subsequently occupied by an iron smelter. After the complete decay and the covering of the site with rubble and debris by the Silver Mountain directly behind it, an early medieval Christian cemetery was established on this site. The special significance of the main building, which was excavated and preserved for the public, lies in the excellent state of preservation of many rare architectural details and wall paintings.
