Built in 1518, the Spendhaus is one of the oldest surviving secular buildings in the district town of Reutlingen, located in the southwestern German state of Baden-Württemberg. It survived the devastating fire catastrophe of September 1726, in which about four-fifths of the building substance of Reutlingen were destroyed, undamaged.
Originally used until the mid-19th century as a storage building for donations of mainly agricultural products, it has served as a central municipal art museum since 1989 after various other public uses. Among others, works by 20th century woodcutters such as HAP Grieshaber, Wilhelm Laage, Werner Höll, Wolfgang Mattheuer or Ernst Wilhelm Nay are part of the essential exhibition stock of the art collection. The half-timbered building is located south of the market square between Spendhausstraße and Lederstraße on the medieval city boundary.
