Neuer Markt, Rostock
Facts and practical information
The Neuer Markt in Rostock is one of the three former marketplaces of the Hanseatic city, along with the Alter Markt and the Hopfenmarkt. On the east side of the market stands the Rostock Town Hall, whose origins date back to the 13th century.
The front of houses that once bordered the north side no longer exists today. The three of the original ten houses that remained on the north side after the bombing of the city by the British Air Force at the end of April 1942 were demolished in 1959. In their place today is, among other things, a lawn. The town hall and two adjoining gabled houses to the south were not damaged by bombs. The southern side of the New Market Square was completely destroyed during the bombing in 1942. After the war, the main post office was built there. The rebuilding of the north side is currently under discussion.
