Church of Sant'Ambrogio, Gazzada Schianno
Facts and practical information
The church of Sant'Ambrogio is the parish church of Morazzone, in the province of Varese and archdiocese of Milan; it is part of the deanery of Azzate.
Built between 1814 and 1817, it is dedicated to St. Ambrose and is the seat of the parish. Documentation shows that, around 1810, parish priest Don Francesco Pesenti thought it was necessary to build a more capacious church than the already built church of Santa Maria and entrusted its design to architect Simone Cantoni. In 1907 the oratory of St. Joseph was built adjacent to the left side of the church; inside are old walls of the earlier 16th-century church with a fresco depicting St. Ambrose, attributed to Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli known as Il Morazzone, or of the school.
