Facts and practical information
The Mount Gazzo Caving Museum is a speleology museum located on the summit of the eponymous Mount Gazzo, 419 m above sea level near Sestri Ponente, a western suburb of Genoa. The museum was opened in May 1969.
The museum-located within the Mount Gazzo Park -is accessed from the churchyard of the sanctuary of Our Lady of Gazzo. It houses reconstructions of the karst phenomena of the mountain accompanied by artifacts, photographs and explanatory panels. These are joined by fossil finds from the Quaternary period including those of a cave bear and a saber-toothed tiger.
Newspapers and photographs commemorating the visit to the shrine-which took place on March 28, 1893-of Elisabeth Wittelsbach, wife of Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary, the famous Princess Sissi, complete the museum's holdings.
The museum has free admission and can be visited daily.
