Torre di Carcangiolas, Quartu Sant'Elena
Facts and practical information
The tower of Carcangiolas is a coastal tower in Quartu Sant'Elena. It stands, in its ruined state, on the beach of Quartu.
The tower is mentioned by historian Giovanni Francesco Fara and therefore built before 1591, the year of his death. The structure, made of limestone and granite, is truncated-conical in shape. The remains of the tower, collapsed and spilled into the sea, stand a short distance from the shoreline.
From the post of the Carcangiolas tower, reused during the last world war, the towers of Mezza Spiaggia, Poetto, and Sant'Elia to the west and Cala Regina to the east can be spotted on a clear day.
The tower partially collapsed on December 23, 1979 at 7 p.m. following a violent storm surge. To this day there is still debate about its recovery.
