Ossario
Facts and practical information
The Ossuary of Solferino is a place of memory and contemplation, located in northern Italy, in the Lombardy region. Also known as the Soldiers' Cemetery, it is a historical ossuary where the remains of soldiers who fell during the Battle of Solferino in 1859 rest.
The Battle of Solferino was one of the bloodiest clashes in the war for Italian unification. It resulted in the loss of life of over 40,000 soldiers, and its brutality inspired Henry Dunant to found the International Red Cross. Therefore, the Ossuary of Solferino is not only a cemetery but also a symbol of humanitarian efforts and a reminder of the costs of war.
Visitors can see thousands of bones and skulls arranged in a way that commemorates the fallen. The monumental structure of the ossuary, built of red brick, rises above the surrounding area, being a visible sign of history and transience. Inside, there is a chapel, as well as museum exhibits dedicated to the battle and its consequences.
