Piazza Gae Aulenti, Milan
Facts and practical information
Piazza Gae Aulenti is an elevated pedestrian square with a circular shape, 100 meters in diameter, located in Milan's business center. Raised 6 meters above street level, it was designed by Argentine architect César Pelli to complement the eponymous towers, currently owned by the Immobiliare Porta Nuova Garibaldi real estate fund and leased to several multinationals including the leading bank Unicredit.
The inauguration took place on December 8, 2012, resulting in the naming of the designer and architect Gae Aulenti who had just passed away at the time.
As from nearby Alvar Aalto Square, the Milan skyline can be excellently enjoyed from Gae Aulenti. The Garibaldi Towers and the adjacent Bosco Verticale skyscrapers, the Lombardy regional government building, the Galfa Tower, the Municipal Technical Services Tower, the Pirelli Skyscraper, the residential towers Solaria, Solea and Aria, and a portion of the Diamante Tower are visible. In addition to this, from the level of the square it is possible to have an impressive overview of the Unicredit Tower, which at 231 meters is the tallest skyscraper in Italy.
A symbol of contemporary Milan, Piazza Gae Aulenti is the setting for a number of commercials and photo shoots, as well as musical and social events, thanks in part to the presence of IBM Studios, a multipurpose wood-and-concrete space on the border between the square and the Library of Trees.
