Facts and practical information
The Royal Mineralogical Museum was established in 1801 by King Ferdinand IV of Naples. It was the first institute of its kind in Italy. It was housed in the former Library of the Jesuit Maximum College, where it is still housed today.
Many important scholars worked there, including Matteo Tondi, Carminantonio Lippi, Arcangelo Scacchi, and Ferruccio Zambonini. In 1845, the Museum hosted the Seventh Congress of Italian Scientists, which was attended by as many as 1,600-11 scientists.
The museum holds about 30,000 specimens, including some very rare in size or beauty, and is now part of the Museum Center for Natural and Physical Sciences of the University of Frederick II.
